Therapy Dog Sam’s Story

Lady Catherine “Cat” Charlotte Fire Department Therapy Dog

Charlotte Fire Department’s new K-9, Lady Katherine, is assigned to Fire Educator Rick Dunton, who serves as her primary handler. “Cat” is named after Katherine Hazemey who worked as a volunteer with K-9 Caring Angels. When Katherine passed away, K-9 Caring Angels wanted to honor her with a K-9 that would go on to serve others in her memory.

About 80 people, a mix of parents, children and school staff, gathered at Mary Walter Elementary School Monday morning while schools were closed for the Presidents Day holiday to mourn the death of 6-year-old Wyatt Norwood, a first grader at the school, and his mother, Jennifer Norwood, 34.

Police have said they believe that Wyatt’s older brother, a 17-year-old Liberty High School junior, fatally shot his mother and brother at their Midland home Feb. 14. Levi Norwood has been charged with two counts of murder. He was apprehended in North Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 15; it is expected that he will be extradited back to Fauquier in a few days…

EL CAJON —

Four-legged, tail-wagging happiness has come to Fire Station 6.

Yara, an 8-month-old black Labrador retriever puppy that will provide comfort to public safety personnel, arrived from the East Coast last week.

She has her own spot in a front office at Heartland Fire & Rescue’s Station 6 in downtown El Cajon, with a big, cozy dog bed and brand-new silver water and food bowls.

Yara quickly made herself at home and it shouldn’t take long for the pup to make her way into the hearts of firefighters and paramedics…
